Sumpter Smith Joint National Guard Base, Ala. -- Birmingham’s Sumpter Smith Joint National Guard Base, home of the 117th Air Refueling Wing (ARW), was selected as one of seven locations under final consideration to base the KC-46A Pegasus aircraft by a U.S. Air Force committee.
The KC-46A Pegasus is a Boeing-designed military aerial refueling and strategic transport aircraft. The 117th ARW currently flies the KC-135R Stratotanker, the oldest operational airframe in the U.S. Air Force. KC-46A performs the same mission with enhanced capabilities, range, and modern features.
“The KC-46A represents our ongoing efforts to modernize our force and stay one step ahead of our threats and rivals,” said Maj. Gen. David Pritchett, Alabama National Guard Adjutant General. “Making this cut represents an acknowledgement of the incredible work done by our Airmen, and the unique strategic value offered by the 117th Air Refueling Wing.”
Col. Mike Adams, 117th ARW commander, said the new aircraft will be crucial to maintaining the wing’s status as a leader in its field. “Our Airmen are eager to take on this next step in our mission,” Adams said. “I want to thank our civil and military leaders for their unwavering support and advocacy, and all the Airmen of the 117th whose commitment to excellence has made this possible.”
Initially, 15 locations were considered, with Sumpter Smith making it through the first round of cuts. The decision comes as the base completes plans to expand the runway and infrastructure, enabling a natural transition to the larger KC-46A aircraft.
The final decisions are anticipated for fall 2025.
